Toronto, July 20, 2017 – Our latest up-and-coming Canadian fashion model is turning heads on the international runways. Towering over most girls at six feet plus, this 17-year-old has caught the attention of some of fashion’s most elite brands. Less than two years into the business, Sara Abt has already walked for Balmain and Elie Saab in Paris. A dream come true for any aspiring fashion model.
Represented by Elite Model Management in Toronto, The Society in New York, and LA Models in Los Angeles, the Calgary native stays pretty grounded and is getting ready to enjoy some down time before hitting the international fashion circuit in September. We spent some time with Sara talking fashion, showing her Toronto from 20 stories up, and enjoying some gourmet ice cream.
It’s All Style To Me: How did you get into modelling?
Sara Abt: My sister modelled before me. She was with my mother agency MA/MODE MODELS, Elite Toronto and with my agency in New York.
IASTM: Who’s your sister?
SA: Nicole (Nikki) Abt. So my mother agency found me through her and I figured, yeah I’ll give it a try.
IASTM: How long have you been modelling and how do you find it?
SA: It’ll be two years come September. I really like it because you’re meeting new people all the time, making new connections and new friends. The industry is really cool and I like learning about it.
IASTM: Nice to wear all the new clothes?
SA: Obviously, especially when you get to keep them. That’s the best part.
IASTM: What was once new is now ubiquitous and it’s hard to imagine the industry without social media. What are your thoughts on its impact on fashion and modelling?
SA: The thing I’ve noticed is how important it is with respect to your image now. It’s interesting that it’s developed into that because when I first started using social media, it was just for fun. It’s cool how you get to express your personality.
IASTM: Which platform do you like most?
IASTM: Same. I don’t spend much time on Facebook anymore.
SA: I don’t even have a Facebook account.
IASTM: Tell me about your personal style. Do you find that modelling has influenced you?
SA: I’m influenced for sure by the shows. My style varies from boyish on some days to very feminine on others. I like girly stuff.
IASTM: Any fashion designers that you’re a big fan of?
SA: I love Versace. It’s very sexy. Also, Oliver’s work for Balmain because it’s strong and his message – powerful women. Actually the first interview I did, well not interview but questionnaire, they asked who my dream designer to work for would be. I said Balmain.
IASTM: You just walked Balmain SS18 show in Paris did you not?
IASTM: Was it cool?
SA: It was really cool.
SA: Kind of. I was very nervous for sure.
IASTM: Elie Saab is one of my favourite couturiers. You had the chance to walk his couture show as well a few weeks ago right?
SA: I did! I closed the show actually.
IASTM: No need to show off now missy.
IASTM: Any style tips that you can give to the guys out there?
SA: Less is more.
IASTM: So nothing flashy then?
SA: I like flashy though.
IASTM: So you’re conflicted?
SA: I am conflicted. I love suits on guys.
IASTM: What about that whole cowboy look? You are from Calgary after all.
SA: Oh, I like both. I love cowboy boots.
IASTM: What do you hate seeing on guys?
SA: [Long pause] I hate a lot of jewelry on guys.
IASTM: What do you have lined up for the rest of the year?
SA: I’m going back home for the summer to Calgary. Going to relax, take a little vacation. Then in September or mid-August actually, I’m back in New York and doing the fashion circuit there. Then it’s off to Milan and Paris. I’m very excited.
IASTM: What’s the best part of modelling for you so far?
SA: Travel for sure, just seeing the world, You usually get a day off to explore new cities. Meeting and working with new people and making new friends. And just learning about fashion is so incredible.
