Toronto, November 8, 2016 – Earlier this year, we had a chance to spend some time with the all-new Volvo XC90. We were smitten by the understated luxury and optimal performance of Motor Trend’s 2016 SUV of the Year. Volvo Cars has followed up on the success of the XC90 with a matching all-new luxury sedan, the Volvo S90.
Few can appreciated the Volvo Cars design evolution more than someone who grew up on Volvos. From our family’s first 1980 Volvo 240DL when I was a little kid, to our last 1994 Volvo 850R – I’ve spent more than 15 years in four different Volvos. When Volvo released their Concept Coupe back in 2013, we knew they were in for a major design revolution and boy did it look good. Clean, contemporary, minimalist styling fused with classic Scandinavian design elements meant an exciting (and less boxy) future for Volvo.
The all-new Volvo S90 (starting at $56,000*) enters the mid-size luxury-car class market with many of the same styling cues of the XC90. The exterior is clean and simple, drawing attention to the bold P1800-styled grille and oversized badge, framed by Volvo’s distinctive Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. Soft curves, sleek taillights and sporty eight-spoke wheels nicely accent the exterior. The interior is truly breathtaking, inspired by the openness and calm of a Scandinavian home. Every design element works in harmony to ensure a clutter-free environment and is made from finest materials such as soft Nappa leather**, bold brushed aluminum and natural wood paneling**.
Volvo Cars hasn’t put style over substance. The S90’s eight-speed automatic, turbocharged, four-cylinder, 2.0L engine uses a supercharger on the low end of the RPM spectrum and larger turbocharger on the high end resulting in 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That will take you from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
New for Volvo and standard on the S90 is the innovative Pilot Assist function. This function helps the driver to drive the car between the road lane while maintaining a preselected time interval to the preceding vehicle. Combine that with sophisticated adaptive cruise control where the S90 smoothly brakes and accelerates based on traffic ahead and you have semi-autonomous driving. The S90 is steering, accelerating and breaking all by itself! This feature has you covered for speeds up to 130 km/h and works very well in clear conditions.
Another great feature for us city drivers is the CleanZone technology which checks incoming air for pollutants and closes the vents when necessary. The active carbon filter also helps protect from harmful gases and unpleasant odours making for a pleasant ride. Ideal for navigating through slow-moving construction zones.
Finally, the audiophile in me is very happy that Volvo is working with Bowers & Wilkins audio setting a new standard for automotive listening. The 19-speaker audio system is accessed through the iPad-sized Sensus console where you can select your sound experience. Gothenburg Concert Hall simulation anyone?
The XC90 and S90 are solidifying Volvo’s position as a stylish, genuine, premium, luxury contender. The beautifully styled and finished S90 is equal parts style and substance, with technology innovations that complement its understated Scandinavian style. Ideal for someone looking for a unique luxury sedan that will turn some heads.
