Toronto, August 1, 2016 – Platinum sponsor National Bank invited us for an exciting night of men’s tennis action at this year’s Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Saturday night semifinal match featured the world number one Novak Djokovic (Serbia) against number ten Gael Monfils (France). All week National Bank greeted fans with a pop-up on the Aviva Centre grounds and lounge inside the Mazda VIP tent. Fans were given a chance to win instant prizes and enter to win a trip to the US Open in New York. The space also provided ATMs and an upper deck lounge area complete with DJ and complimentary drinks.
In a season where many of the top players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled out due to the Olympics in Rio, the path was clear for a lot of Canadian talent. Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil did their best against Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in a doubles match that preceded the singles semifinal, but sadly they came short.
Pyrotechnics lit up the sky immediately after Novak Djokovic steamrolled a tired looking Gael Monfils who had played a tough match against Milos Raonic (Canada) the night before. In the 12th meeting between the two, Djokovic broke Monfils – who was on a nine-match win streak – four times to maintain a perfect record against the popular Frenchman in a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The win saw the top seed reach the final of 14 of his past 15 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. Djokovic went on to win his record 30th trophy at the Masters 1000 level rallying past third-seed Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday, recording five aces and conceded no double faults in his fifth-career Rogers Cup final. The Serbian star won 81% of his first serves with the match taking just over 80-minutes to complete.
