Toronto, March 30, 2015 – When renowned Parisian menswear boutique Loding opened its North American doors to not one, but two Toronto locations last year, we couldn’t wait to check them out. Using high-quality leather from the renowned Tanneries du Puy, Loding produces contemporary men’s shoes at very reasonable prices.
A growing trend in men’s footwear has been the application of coloured patina treatments to the leather for a custom coloured finish. Lucky for us, renowned resident patina artisan Emmanuel Farre is now working out of Loding’s Yorkville Toronto location (133 Avenue Road). For around $150, the Toulouse, France native transforms Loding’s high-quality, 100% full grain calf leather shoes (starting at $350) into custom coloured works of art and the results are quite spectacular.
We had the opportunity to work with Farre on a pair of our own custom patina Loding Milano shoes for It’s All Style To Me. The exclusive patina process (patination) began with the selection of tan-coloured dress shoes and a brief consultation with Farre. We discussed options for our mixed blue-grey treatment that we thought would be perfect for this spring and summer. Something bold, but not too loud. Something very French, but with a shot of Toronto in it.
The Pigeon was born. A patina treatment with shades of blue, grey and purple with a touch of iridescence – inspired by the feathers of the common Toronto street pigeon. The process, which can take up to 60 hours from start to finish, began with the cleaning and stripping of our selected shoes. Next was the layered hand painting, followed by the application of shoe cream for pigmentation and nourishing of the leather. The shoes were left to dry and finished off with a high-gloss polish.
Emmanuel is able to apply a patina treatment to a variety of genuine leather goods from shoes and belts to handbags and gloves. The key is that they must be tan or light coloured. Loding also gives people the opportunity to spruce up their old leather favourites into something new – perfect with spring and summer around the corner. Prices quoted upon consultation.
