Basel, April 10, 2014 – Every year, Basel, Switzerland hosts the biggest and most luxurious watch and jewellery fair in the world. Basel World brings together 150,000 attendees including reps, buyers, journalists from every continent. Let’s focus on six watches that were crowd favourites. As the official timekeeper of the upcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Hublot unveiled their Big Bang Unico Bi-Retrograde Chrono watch (Soccer Bang for short). It took 18 months of R&D to develop and design this beast and the result is very nice. Next up, the Breguet 3795 Tourbillon & Perpetual Calendar watch is absolutely stunning. This ‘naked’ watch is totally see-through from the front and back with dials for the month, day, hours. Cobalt blue hands against the silver adds a nice pop.
The Tag Heuer Monaco V4 Tourbillon has to be my personal favourite. This is the first tourbillon watch to be driven by transmission belts no thicker than a single hair. By juxtaposing its patented belt technology with the emblematic tourbillon — this watch breaks with all accepted watchmaking codes and conventions.
Designer watches are usually hit or miss. Big name ready-to-wear and couture designers license out production of their watches and results can be mixed. Dior, Chanel, and Giorgio Armani get it right for their 2014 offerings. We’re particularly loving the Emporio Armani Swiss Made for him and the heritage-inspired Dior VIII collection for her.
