Toronto, November 22, 2013 – There may be no name more synonymous with the marriage of rock and roll with fashion than men’s fashion designer John Varvatos. Raised in Detroit, Michigan the melting pot of America – where Motown, rock and roll, blues, jazz and punk have resonated over the decades, it’s easy to see how music would have been a major influence on a young up-and-coming Greek-American designer.
John’s designs draw inspiration from the past, repurposing ideas into something contemporary. “I have a great reverence for the craft of old world tailoring but a big part of what I love designing is functional, timeless clothing that is created to be lived in,” says Varvatos who was in town for the launch of Toronto’s John Varvatos Bowery Concept Boutique in Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Wednesday, November 20th.
The Toronto location is the twelfth of the stand-alone stores globally and is 3,500 square feet of sheer rock fashion bliss. From the incredible historic limited edition rock photography that you can actually purchase to the ornate leather furniture and Persian rugs, this place looks like a museum. You can find everything Varvatos here: John Varvatos Collection, John Varvatos USA, and Converse by John Varvatos is all here! The majority of this season’s collection centres on elegant tailored pieces that are ideal for our cold weather as well as perfectly imperfect details on garments that fit our local Toronto lifestyle.
“Growing up in Detroit, I spent many summers in Canada and the beautiful city of Toronto. This is a dream come true to open my first in this amazing city,”said Varvatos. When we asked him about any aspirations to collaborate on collections with fast fashion retailers such as H&M or Topman, Varvatos alluded to having his hands full and something like that not happening any time soon. One can dream though and we did catch him sporting Jay Strut’s Isabel Marant for H&M cardigan at the Thompson Hotel after party sponsored by Grey Goose Vodka.
If you get a chance to head up to Yorkdale Shopping Centre, be sure to visit John Varvatos and pick up a copy of John Varvatos: Rock In Fashion, which went was published only last month. The massive hardcover documents the elements of rock style that have embodied the music community for decades. Written by John Varvatos with Holly George-Warren, the book shares contents of Varvatos’ personal notebook that he has kept over the years. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for the music I discovered growing up in Detroit in the late 1960s and 1970s,” says Varvatos. “There are traces of it in the way I dress and the look of my menswear collations over the past dozen years. Overall, this book is a collection of visuals that have been meaningful to me and have made a lasting impression on my work.” It really is a treasure trove of extraordinary rock photography and a personal, incisive perspective on rock style and its numerous incarnations. At only $60+tax, the book is truly a steal. Especially if your copy is signed by the man himself.
