Toronto, November 14, 2013 – Elena Semikina, Miss Universe Canada 2010 introduced me to Canadian menswear designer Gian-Paolo Mazzotta when she listed his bespoke shirts and suits (for her significant other) on a Holiday Wish List in 2011. Mazzotta’s signature style and attention to detail immediately caught my eye. I was also impressed that he proudly manufactured all of his garments in Canada overseeing all aspects of production. Never too boring nor too flashy, Mazzotta’s designs are clean, contemporary, and reasonably priced. I also liked how most of his pieces transitioned effortlessly from office into night.
Working with together him was inevitable and I have been consulting and representing Gian-Paolo Mazzotta in a Marketing and Public Relations capacity respectively since April 2013. In addition to producing his SS14 lookbook, supporting his MasterCard Stylicity campaign, and shooting his FW13 advertising campaign, one of the projects we had discussed was collaborating on several Gian-Paolo Mazzotta X It’s All Style To Me statement pieces. For our first collaborative project, Gian-Paolo suggested a FW13 made-to-measure sports jacket that exemplified Mazzotta’s tailoring, while incorporating my personal style and aesthetic. I started by referring back to the It’s All Style To Me TREND REPORT: Men’s Fall/Winter 2013 – a trend report that I publish personally, months ahead of glossy semi-annual publications such as GQ and Esquire. I really wanted to capitalize on one of my favourite trends for FW13, which are the bold plaids and checks found in many international designer outerwear and suiting.
I started by selecting one of Gian-Paolo’s Loro Piana wool/cashmere/silk blend fabrics that really stood out. The Italian Loro Piana heritage, the rich warm yet comfortable fabric, and the beautiful on-trend pattern made the selection easy. The next step was to choose a liner, so I went with one of the least represented colours in the LP fabric – powder blue, in the Bemberg fabric. It’s a resilient synthetic fabric often used in place of silk to line high quality suits and coats. From there, I took a look at the selection of standard buttons and felt that this sports jacket needed a bold button instead. Gian-Paolo showed me samples of some of the decorative buttons that he stocked and I knew right away that the dark brown buttons with the coat of arms detailing would compliment such a bold pattern perfectly.
The last step in the process was to review my options with respect to cut, venting, lapel style and size, and pockets. This is a very vintage Gatsby meets Boardwalk Empire 1920s/1930s pattern with British styles predating even that. It was important to both of us to make the sports jacket look contemporary. We went with a slimmer lapel, simple pockets with an additional ticket pocket, a shorter modern hemline, and double-vented slim-fit design. About a month passed from first fitting, to the second fitting and ultimate final product. The result is pretty remarkable. This is a sports jacket that we are both very proud of.
Feel free to ask for the same jacket, or make your own with the help of Gian-Paolo himself. He’s located at 803 Queen Street West and carries a full range of off-the-rack, made-to-measure, and bespoke apparel and accessories for every occasion.
