Enter Hedi Slimane: (Yves) Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2013

Paris, October 1, 2012 – Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble. Hedi Slimane is back and he’s brought witches. Did the man live up to the hype? The consensus may be that while there was a tip of the hat (couldn’t resist) to the heritage of the fashion house, it was hardly the monuments return most were expecting from Slimane. Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang and Alber Elbaz were all present at Paris’ Grand Palais to take in the legendary designer’s Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2013 Collection. Is it just me, or is this not shades of a season past? Think Lanvin, Christian Dior & Dior Homme, even DSquared2 Fall/Winter 2011.

Dior Homme influences are clearly there and mix well with the SS13 tuxedo trend evident in this collection. The maxi-dresses with the billowy sleeves and pussy bows might be hit, might be miss. Definitely Coachella worthy. Tasselled, front-laced suede dresses are something may be better suited to the Diesels and DSquared2s of the fashion world but YSL? The man has certainly rolled the dice. We’ll have to wait for SS13 season sales to determine if this was madness or genius.
