This was as decadently luxurious as American fashion gets. The ruggedly elegant Aspen-ready Michael Kors Fall/Winter 2012 Collection wowed a celebrity-packed crowd at the Lincoln Center last week. As with many of the FW12 collections, we’ve said good-bye to the simplicity of 1960s Mad Men and have begun ushering in homage after homage to the bold styling of the 1930s à la Boardwalk Empire.
The textures for FW12 are cozy. Tweeds, mohairs, and knits pair effortlessly with sleek leather, slipper satin and delicate lace. Bold checks and buffalo plaids are farm from exclusive to the collections of Mr. Kim Jones, Dame Vivienne Westwood and other European designers. They are abundant in both the men’s and women’s Michael Kors collections.
Kors’ palette is limited opting for cream, black, and crimson with subtle tones of saddle, chocolate and camel. Framed doctor’s bags and satchels have a modernist edge – the perfect compliment to rugged oxfords, boots and Mary Janes. Coyote furs, melton wool chesterfields, fox stadium coats, beaded lace dresses, and alpaca knits are some of our most coveted in womenswear. The mohair crombie, check suits, mohair fleece sweaters, waxed suede utility trousers, alpaca teddy bear duffle coat, and furry gloves look incredible on the men.
Not much in the way of evening wear for the men, but some stunning paillette chemises with peek-a-boo cutouts for the women. The perfect look for the Oscars. By the way, did anyone else catch Victoria’s Secret model Lily Aldridge’s little sister Ruby on the catwalk? Cute.
