In the same way that pants that are too short can look ridiculous, not to mention juvenile, pants that are too long can be abominable. Having up to an inch break on the front of your trousers is acceptable, anything more than that and you’ve gone too far. You can be mistaken for someone who is clueless in regards to tailoring or worst yet, someone who doesn’t really care about how they look. In either case, it will ruin your image. Please avoid it at all costs and if in doubt see a tailor.
